What is Dogecoin?

The wonderfully wacky history of the World's favourite crypto

Created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer in 2013, Dogecoin went from a fun little joke to "the people's currency" within a few years. Inspired by an internet meme of a Shiba Inu dog, it quickly gained popularity due to its low transaction fees and fast block times.

In the past few years it has experienced tremendous growth, reaching an all-time-high(ATH) price of $0.7376 in May of 2021 and market cap surging from around $20 million at the beginning of 2017 to over $85 billion at its peak.

The name "Dogecoin" is often associated with the Shiba Inu dog from the "Doge" internet meme, which features a picture of the Shiba Inu along with captions written in Comic Sans font and broken English. The use of this meme in the cryptocurrency's branding contributes to the pronunciation as "dohj-coin."
